TAKEOVER TUESDAY: D.I.Y Studded Shorts

This week's Takeover Tuesday is brought to you by SJ, the gorgeous girly behind CowBiscuits, one of our favourite fashion/beauty blog reads at RNR HQ.

I saw ripped, pyramid-studded shorts everywhere last summer; on blogs, DIY sites, in Topshop and even in New York (they were $120!) but with the help of numerous images as inspiration I created my very own for only £2.75!

Here is how:

First up, I got a pair of Primark shorts I found for £1 (they had a button missing) and took a Stanley knife, placed a catalogue underneath and made a few slices in the shorts.

Then using the very tip of the blade, I scraped along picking the white threads out and stripping the denim.

I also scraped the knife across the zip and pocket lines to give the shorts a more worn look. Depending on if you like a messy look then you can trim the white threads accordingly.

I bought the pyramid studs on Ebay, a pack of 50 for £1 plus 75p postage - bargain! 
I made a couple different lines of studs across the front and back of the shorts to finish them. They do hurt your fingers after a while but I used a metal nail file and it did the trick just fine!

I’d like to start this blog post by saying when I was invited by Rock 'N Rose to be a guest blogger they told me I could write about anything I wanted, ironically all I wanted to write about was Rock 'N Rose…

It is not like an excuse was needed but when I saw Alexa Chung at the Chanel Couture show last week wearing a bow tie around her neck I knew I was, at last, in good company. Bow ties have always been a secret love of mine, something about them has a capability to make me smile whenever I see one worn – especially on girls. They have a mischievous look about them, a bow tie always looks like it would be the kind of friend to encourage you to stay out past one on a weeknight or eat that chocolate bar you have seen in the fridge that you know isn’t yours.

The Bow Tie was thought to originate from Prussian wars of the 17th century: it was thought the Croat mercenaries used a scarf around the neck to hold together the opening of their shirts. This was soon adopted (under the name cravat, derived from the French for "Croat") by the upper classes in France, then a leader in fashion, and flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries… and you thought this blog post wouldn’t be educational.

Famous bow-tie wearers of the female variety, FBW’s to you and me, include Doris Day, Diane Keaton and Diana Ross but don’t worry - your name doesn’t have to begin with the letter D to wear one. Others include Marlene Dietrich and recently spotted on the red carpet donning the look is Chloe Sevigny, Diane Kruger and Rihanna. If you’re a bit nervous about committing yourself fully to the penguin ensemble I’d say Rock 'N Rose are your saviours!

TAKEOVER TUESDAY: Sweet Silhouette Style

I’d like to think I’m one of those people. I generally know what suits my personality, style and body shape. I know that I’m not a playsuit and harem trouser girl, as much as I wish I was because I do love those trends; but it’s just not my style and I would feel uncomfortable in it.

That’s my favourite thing about fashion- being able to express anything and everything through your choice of ensemble- it reflects your personality, your mood, your sense of style. It’s a subtle way of telling people, including strangers, what kind of a person you are. I also love that I can walk down the street and totally admire and accept other people’s expressions, without actually sharing the same look.

I take inspiration from absolutely anything and everything. I convey my feelings and moods through my clothing, hair and accessories but the way in which I do so is influenced by many things- from magazine editorials and vintage wardrobes to strangers in the streets and window displays.

I can ooze girliness entwined in floral prints and dewy colours, while at other times I find myself wrapped up in chunky knits and scarves or grungy attitude. Every day is a new day: my mood changes, I’m experiencing a change of approach and thoughts, depending on where I am, the places I’ve seen and the books I’ve read. Influence is all around us and to be able to take that inadvertently and project it through your outfit is, to me, amazing.

I do sometimes fuse a lot of inspirations together while at other times I’m feeling one trend in particular and will flaunt heavily that key look. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t let celebrities influence the way I dress. As soon as one celeb is seen rockin’ a specific look or trend, everyone else jumps on the bandwagon! This in turn prompts major fashion retailers to update their store displays to mirror that style. We’re then often left with somewhat little choice as to the looks we can achieve- for instance, nautical items are currently lacking in-store as they were last season’s key trend.

I do share the same taste as a lot of you but every so often I like to have extra fun with fashion and that usually involves a lot of accessories, be it jewellery or hair goodies! Rock ‘N’ Rose is definitely my first port of call when it comes to headwear. Their collection is beautiful, individual and affordable but I’m sure you already know that if you’re reading this!

Anyway, now might be a good time to let you in on a few of my outfit choices and you’ll see the different sides to me through my wardrobe.

I love rock chic. My favourite rock chick has to be Taylor Momsen. While her ensembles can sometimes be dull, there are times where she’ll mix things up with chunky knits or scarves, or edgy dresses or shirts and tough leather jackets. Her signature rouge lips, dishevelled bleach blonde hair and heavily smudged eyes make me wish I had porcelain skin with blonde locks! If you’re feeling adventurous, I think a hot way of complementing this look would be to add the Cyndi Oversized Lace Bow Headband for a touch of goth.

I usually get casual vibes. I don’t believe you need to doll yourself up to play dress-up and you can have just as much fun with a laid-back look by mixing prints and textures and experimenting with different colours. This look also affords you a level of quirkiness which is probably why I like it the most. A prime example of having fun with fashion is the Scrabble Ring, as seen on Pixie Lott, along with the Rhinestone Lego Ring. I’m not very wacky with my style so this fine level of eccentricity suits me just fine!

This look has the perfect Summery feel and is made up of pure girliness combining floral prints with gorgeous pearls and sweet heels with bow detailing. I will usually curl my hair when I’m working this look, letting them drop into natural tousles throughout the day. A perfect way to dress your locks is with the stunning Alexa Sequin Headband in Ivory or the Bow Beaded Bandeau Headband in Silver/Ivory. The celebrities that I think flaunt this prim and pretty look oh-so-well are Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson- divine!

I like layers. Whether it’s layering multiple chains and pendants together or wearing a vest top with a tee on top with a cardigan on top with a coat on top… I just love flirting with different textures and patterns- but I also know my limits! Sometimes, the clashing of fabrics, textures and colours work to simultaneously harmonise and conflict in a way that alleviates each piece- and, to me, knowing when that’s actually the case (as opposed to looking like a palette threw up on you) is pure instinct. It depends on the size of the patterns, as well as the shades of colour that are involved.

So that’s my take on fashion. Every now and then, if I’m feeling somewhat daring, I like to be particularly bold and experiment with bright colours. I like to wear ensembles that say something about my character- whether it’s saying I’m casual with a hint of attitude, or I’m girly and trustworthy, it all depends on my mood as I’m picking out clothes from my wardrobe. Just remember that there are (apart from the obvious ones such as muffin tops, exposed side boobs and – dare I say it – fur boots) no rules when it comes to fashion. Just wear it your way and with a smile and you can’t go wrong.

Thought we'd post a few snaps from behind the scenes at our latest shoot featuring sequins, sparkles and a few more sequins. We shot our brand new range of headwear along with a couple of our best sellers thrown in for good measure. These pieces will hit the store soon!

Glee-ful

So I've been a Journey fan since childhood and I like to think Don't Stop Believing is the soundtrack to my life (so far). So this whole fanaticism with the song (cheers X Factor, as much as I do love you) irritates me beyond belief, I OWN THAT SONG. In my head I'm screaming "But I've listened to that song daily since I was eight years old, you beasts!". Once I even considered a "Don't Stop Believing" tattoo - don't judge me.

But for some very odd reason, the Glee version makes me tingle a little bit, just like the original. It must be because I ADORE Glee! I'm Glee-ful, woohoo!

I've seen just the first four episodes, because I'm not a cheater like some of you Glee addicts out there. I like to get my weekly dose of cheese on a Monday evening, then top it up with regular T4, E4 and E4+1 repeats throughout the week. Perfecto.

Never have a I wanted a bag so much. The lovely lovely Alexa bag by Mulberry that is.

Named after British style icon Alexa Chung, it's gonna set me back a hefty £795. Oh no, wait - £895, because it also comes in OVERSIZED. The best word ever when it comes to bags and accessories.

I first spotted this bag back in September, and my love for it has grown steadily ever since. Surely this is a reason to invest? It's not as if it's a in-lust-for-a-week thing (so I tell myself).

So the question is, beautiful iconic Mulberry bag or rubbish boring house deposit?

Another Year Over

2009 was a GREAT year for Rock 'n Rose, so we've rounded up our best bits, mainly for our own benefit (read on), but you can take a sneaky peak too. We got a little philosophical whilst listening to John Lennon's War Is Over in the office over Christmas (thanks HeartFM) - "So this is Christmas, And what have you done? Another year over, A new one just begun." So deep.

Plus, in August we moved into our brank spanking new office, studio and warehouse. I'm gonna post some piccies as soon as we get round to making it look respectable.
